Is the Mercedes-AMG GT a Good Car?

Yes, the Mercedes-AMG GT is an exceptional vehicle in the luxury sports car class. This two-seater comes in coupe and roadster (convertible) body styles. The GT features potent V8 engines and handling that you'd expect to see in a high-speed car chase scene in an action movie. Inside, the seats have a decent amount of space and the kind of high-end styling and top-notch materials that Mercedes is known for. The GT has a usable trunk and a generous list of standard features, which you can’t say about many cars in this class. Some competitors offer more tech features and better fuel economy than the GT. Still, the Mercedes is one of the most impressive cars out there, all things considered.

Should I Buy the Mercedes-AMG GT?

This Mercedes is a great car, but that doesn't make it a great value. There’s hardly anything you can ask for that the GT doesn't provide. However, you can find more practical alternatives by shopping around. You're bound to find much more affordable luxury sports cars that you like just as much as the GT, including the Jaguar F-Type. The Porsche 911 also has a lower base price than the GT, though its higher trims can get pretty pricey. If you want a Mercedes-Benz that's more practical than the GT, consider the S-Class. It's incredibly lavish, and its AMG trims put down more power to the road than the GT.

Should I Buy a New or Used Mercedes-AMG GT?

This is the first year we've covered the GT, but Mercedes has been making it since the 2015 model year. For the most part, little has changed in the way of features between the car's debut and its current model year. However, the 2017 and 2018 models both have expanded trim/engine lineups. The 2018 model is the first to offer a GT roadster, and it also has slightly more powerful engines (the base engine went from 456 to 469 horsepower).
If you're looking for the high-performance GT coupe, consider shopping for an older model to save money. If you want the roadster, you’ll need the 2018 version.

How Much Does the Mercedes-AMG GT Cost?

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT has a base price of $112,400. Even for a luxury sports car, that’s steep. Supercars like the Acura NSX and Audi R8 are significantly more expensive than the GT, but almost every other luxury sports car has a much lower starting price. In fact, several class rivals’ starting prices coming in at around half the price of this Mercedes. If you want the GT roadster, you’re looking at a starting price of $124,400. The top GT trims start around $157,000.

Mercedes-AMG GT Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Mercedes-AMG GT or Jaguar F-Type?
The Jaguar F-Type is another two-seater that comes in coupe and roadster body styles, but its base price is practically half of the GT's. The F-Type also has a wider range of engines than the GT. In addition to several V8 options, it also has turbocharged four-cylinder and supercharged six-cylinder engines. In order to get power similar to what's found in the GT, you'll have to opt for one of the F-Type's available V8s. Both cars have smooth rides and agile handling.
Though you'll find a similar list of amenities in both models, the Mercedes has a higher-quality cabin with more supportive seats and a user-friendly infotainment system. Between these two, the Mercedes is the better vehicle. But with a starting price that’s $50,000 lower than the GT’s, the Jaguar is much cheaper. The F-Type's relatively low position in our rankings is based on its abysmal predicted reliability rating.
Which Is Better: Mercedes-AMG GT or Porsche 911?
The Porsche 911 finish slightly higher in our luxury sports car rankings, and it costs roughly $20,000 less than the GT. Both cars have similarly exhilarating performance, but the 911 Turbo S Exclusive’s engine puts out more power than any GT engine. Additionally, the Porsche has amazing handling, and all-wheel drive is available (unavailable in the Mercedes).
On the inside, the 911 features comfortable, supportive front seats and – unlike the GT – a rear seat. The 911's upscale cabin also offers more technology than the GT's, and it gets a five-out-of-five predicted reliability rating. Go with the Porsche.
Which Is Better: Mercedes-AMG GT or Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
The super luxury Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a practical alternative to the GT. The S-Class doesn't look as fierce as the GT’s AMG model, but its engine lineup ranges from 362 to 621 horsepower. The S-Class is agile for its size, and its gas mileage estimates are better than the GT's. The S-Class is available as a sedan, coupe, or convertible.
Both cars feature attractive interiors, but the S-Class has one of the nicest interiors among all cars, and many more features are available. Plus, four or five people can fit in the S-Class’ comfortable cabin. Most buyers will prefer the S-Class over the GT. Its base price is about $20,000 less than the GT, and it offers more. If you're a sports car enthusiast, however, the GT may be a more appealing option.

GT Performance

GT Engine: One for Each Trim
Every GT features a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, but the power outputs vary by trim level. The base GT makes 469 horsepower, while the top-of-the-line GT R puts out 577 horsepower. Every trim is fast, but the top two trims really stand out for their face-melting accelerative abilities. The engines are responsive and pair well with the smooth-shifting dual-clutch transmission.
GT Gas Mileage: Don’t Skip the Pit Stops
The GT is a far cry from a hybrid. This Mercedes gets 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, which are lower ratings than most other luxury sports cars receive. In the GT’s defense, however, not every competitor has a standard V8 engine.
Compared to the Jaguar F-Type (four-cylinder) and Porsche 911 (six-cylinder) – which both have smaller engines – you’ll spend at least $700 more per year on gas in the GT.
GT Ride and Handling: A Handling Dynamo
Like most luxury sports cars, the GT delivers a firm but comfortable ride. Still, it really stands out for its handling. The sharp steering keeps the car pointed exactly where you want it, and the outstanding road grip means you’re likely to lose your nerve before you push this car to its limits.

How Many People Does the GT Seat?
The two-seat GT provides decent visibility for the driver. The seats have ample head- and legroom and plenty of bolstering, but they aren’t wide enough for everyone to ride in comfortably. And because the seats are designed for performance, they don’t provide typical luxury-car levels of support.

GT Interior Quality
The AMG GT is a sports car first, but it’s still a Mercedes. This means it features premium materials throughout a well-styled interior. The cabin is reasonably spacious for a two-seater, and it’s a great place to spend time.
GT Cargo Space
The GT coupe hatchback has about 10 cubic feet of trunk space, which is enough room for a couple of golf bags or about six shopping bags. Some rivals have larger trunks, but many also have trunks with less than 10 cubic feet of space.
GT Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation
Standard features in the AMG GT include dual-zone automatic climate control, a four-speaker audio system, satellite radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, the COMAND infotainment system with an 8.4-inch display screen, navigation, and Mercedes’ touchpad controller. You can add one of two Burmester premium audio systems for outstanding sound quality.
The infotainment system presents few problems beyond the touchpad controller’s learning curve. However, the GT doesn’t offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which you can get in some rivals. Which Mercedes-AMG GT Model Is Right for Me?

There are four GT trims to choose from. All feature a twin-turbocharged V8 engine (though horsepower and torque ratings differ for each trim), a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive.
While the higher trims might offer an extra tech feature or two, they generally only get you a more powerful engine and a few more performance-related features. Unless you’re going to routinely take your GT to the track, you probably won’t even notice the difference. With that in mind, the base model makes a good choice for many buyers. It delivers thrilling performance and is available as a convertible or coupe.
Each trim offers a number of individual features and option packages that can cost up to several thousand dollars. These include different styling options, high-performance braking systems, an upgraded suspension, a performance exhaust, a Burmester audio system, adaptive cruise control, and more.
Mercedes-AMG GT
The AMG GT has a base price of $112,400. It features a 469-horsepower V8. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a four-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, driver drowsiness monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and the COMAND infotainment system with an 8.4-inch display screen, navigation, and Mercedes’ touchpad controller.
The AMG GT roadster has a starting price of $124,400. It comes with a power-folding soft top. Convertible models have mostly the same features list as the coupe, but there are a few differences. Lane keep assist and an active damping suspension are standard in the coupe but optional in the convertible. The roadster, however, comes with Mercedes’ Airscarf, which isn’t offered in coupe models.
Mercedes-AMG GT S
The AMG GT S starts at $132,400. This trim has a 515-horsepower engine. Its features list is mostly the same as the base model’s, though the GT S comes with an 11-speaker Burmester audio system.
Mercedes-AMG GT C
The AMG GT C has a starting price of $145,000. The GT C features a 550-horsepower V8 and comes standard with blind spot monitoring and a 10-speaker Burmester audio system. The GT C also comes with a feature that lets you select multiple modes that affect the dual-clutch transmission’s shift timing.
This is the other trim offered as a convertible. The AMG GT C roadster starts at $157,000. In addition to the power-folding soft top, the roadster comes with ventilated front seats and Mercedes’ Airscarf system.
Mercedes-AMG GT R
The AMG GT R is the top trim, and it has a starting price of $157,000. It comes with a 577-horsepower engine. Standard features include a traction control selector and a carbon fiber roof.  The GT R isn’t offered with a sunroof.

The Final Call

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT is a world-class automobile. It provides elite performance and has an impeccable interior. This car has no major flaws, and the fact that it isn’t the top-rated car in the class is a product of how absurdly great some of the cars in the class are rather than a poor reflection on the GT. Its high price means it’s not the best value, but if you can afford it, the GT belongs on your shopping list.
